MER - Washington - 2 March:
    Much that is happening today in the Middle East goes back mainly to British "diplomacy" of yesteryear.
    To divide and conquer the Arabs after World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, it was British colonial officials who came up with the idea of a Kuwait and enlisted the despicable al-Sabah clan to do their bidding.
    When the Iraqis today remind us of this it may be conveniently said to be but history in the West, but it is everyday reality for them.
    After all, what the British did back then is the American protectorate and surrogate aircraft carrier known as Kuwait today.
    Much the same in Palestine. It is the legacy of British treachery and League of Nations manipulation that brought about the fracturing of this once Arab land, its original inhabitants now relegated to "autonomous" reservations through an American-manipulated "peace process". And like the League before it, today's United Nations is very much twisted and turned to further such injustice and repression, with as yet unknown ramifications for the future.
    Like American intrigues of today, so much that the British have done remains obfuscated by secret plots and secrecy laws.
    But every once and awhile the truth shines through and the dastardly deeds become known.
    Watch for an explosive story to soon break into the news -- British death-squads in Northern Ireland. The targets? Not just IRA leaders, but rather random Catholics. The aim -- not that different than in the past when the British ran the Middle East -- to sow confusion, demoralization, and divisions among those fighting against the Brits for their freedom and independence.
    How fitting America's only active ally in the destruction of Iraq and the ongoing plots to create a compliant "client" government in Baghdad -- no matter what the cost to the Iraqi people -- is "Great" Britain, now increasingly an appendage of its offspring, the United States of America.
