MADELEINE'S LIE OF THE WEEK:

"WE ONLY SERVE THE VEGETABLES"

MER - Washington - 5/10/98:
The following quote and excerpts are from an article by Robert Fisk in The Independent last week. The American Secretary of State knows better. She knows very well that Washington is nearly totally dominated, as is her Administration, by the Israeli/Jewish lobby. Washington is not the server, nor the butler. Washington is the party that provides the guns and the money, the U.N. vetoes and the continual excuses, that have made Israeli policies possible for decades. Washington is the complicitous and guilty party; not
the "even-handed" "peace negotiator".

Bottom Line: Washington is the indispensable party without which Israeli policies would quickly collapse. The U.S. need not actually act AGAINST Israel. All it need do is stop the unprecedented flow of guns and money TO Israel. Washington need not embargo Israel as it does Cuba, Iraq, and other countries around the world. All it need do is stop fronting for and arming Israel.

But instead, Washington keeps pretends to be the "even-handed"  "peace partner" of both the Arabs and the Israelis. And the gullible, weak-minded Arab "client-regimes" keep buying this crap, year after year, ad infinitum. And the Israelis go right on expanding and blustering, repressing and torturing, knowing that in the end it is they who wag the dog of Washington's tale.

THE FANTASY PEACE

"It's up to the parties [to decide] as to whether we are serving the vegetables well."

--Madeleine Albright
U.S. Secretary of State
London, 5/6/98

Mr Arafat is not going to get a Palestinian state on this little rump of territory, carved up as it already is by roads exclusively for the
use of Jewish settlers...

Yet still Mrs Albright talked of progress - she used the word at least 18 times in just a few minutes... Only Mr Arafat, partly stooped as he stood outside 10 Downing Street, gave any clue to the fantasy world in which the negotiators were immersing themselves. He had "heard" from Mrs Albright, he said, that there had been "some progress"...

Mrs Albright...remarked of America's peace-making efforts that "it's up to the parties [to decide] as to whether we are serving the vegetables well."  Perhaps that will be written on Oslo's tombstone.
