MER - Washington - 22 February, 1998:
A major traditional "teach-in" (not the CNN type) took place in Cambridge at MIT over the weekend.
Regardless of what takes place in the coming few days, as the "international
community" attempts to outmanuver the U.S. war machine at least for a time,
the words of Professor Howard Zinn should be heard and understood by all
Americans:
"Yes, Saddam Hussein has treated with great cruelty the people, but in
that the United States has far exceeded him. The United States, in the
devastation of the Gulf War, in the embargo, in the killing of a million
people in the aftermath of the war, has visited a devastation on women,
children, average Iraqi citizens, that goes far beyond what Saddam Hussein
has done."

Emeritus, Boston University, Dept of History Cambridge, MA, 2/21/98
