MER EDITORIAL - 11/08/97:
In a week Madeleine Albright, the most Israeli-oriented American Secretary of State in history in the most Israeli-infiltrated American Administration in history, will be in Doha, Qatar.
The Americans and the Israelis set up "regional economic summits" as part of their "peace process" in order to push forward their hegemonic political and economic interests. Doha is to be the fourth such "summit" since the end of the Gulf War and the Madrid Conference that followed.
On her way to Doha Ms. Albright is stopping in London to see Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu. How fitting. Meanwhile, Minister Ariel Sharon, a man long responsible for massacres against Palestinians, a man for whom the term war-criminal has been used by many over the years, the man most responsible for building Israeli settlements and destroying Palestinian homes, will be heading to Doha along with hundreds of Israeli businessmen, politicians, and Mossad agents.
Simply said, this is an outrageous and despicable situation. This one should be a no-brainer. It should have been canceled. It still should be. But if the Arab client-regimes can't bring themselves to defy American orders and bribes, then at the least self-respecting business persons, and that includes journalists as well, should simply not go.
To
be raped by a powerful and duplicitous bully is one thing. To participate
in it, allow it to take place repeatedly, and to continually pretend the
situation is otherwise... that's another thing altogether.
The
Arab regimes, it seems, are collectively acting as a battered woman --
taking more and more abuse all the time.
