QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
"...as soon as possible,
as soon as possible,
as soon as possible."
MER - Washington - 11 April:
Suffering from depression, exhaustion, Parkinsons, and megalomania, Yasser Arafat marches
on; his last years under American tutelage, CIA control, and Israeli manipulation. Nowhere
but in the Middle East with its long history of client-regimes and repression would such a
failed and discredited personality continue in power. Meanwhile, all around him, the
forces of corruption and repression continue to dig into Palestinian society draining it
of its remaining psychological fortitude while lowering Palestinian conditions still
further at every turn. Only Arafat's cronies and handlers, men like Abu Mazen and Nabil
Shaath whose stock portfolios continue to grow with every visit to their American and
European interlocutors, are benefiting from the miserable "peace
process" inflicted on the Palestinians. The "good old days" of the direct
Israeli occupation are gone; today's "double occupation" far worse by design.
On the same day last month when the Major of Jerusalem was announcing still further
boundary expansion -- soon the Jewish city will reach from Ramallah to Bethlehem to Ma'ale
Adunim -- Yasser Arafat was ranting and raving again in Cairo. He has truly become Mr. No
Credibility.
"The peace process is going through a dangerous phase and is about to take its last
breath."*
So Arafat says in public; and of course we've all heard it ad infinitum from him so often
in the past. In private, nevertheless, he and cronies continue to rake in the billions
sent by the gullible Europeans to essentially pay for Israel's repackaged occupation. And
at the same time he works ever more closely with the American CIA and the Israeli Shinbet
turning the remaining pockets of Palestinian population into "autonomous"
reservations bounded by growing internal repression and omnipresent external military
checkpoints.
"If a broad Arab summit cannot be convened, I suggest that a
mini-summit be held because supreme Arab national interest demands that a meeting be held
as soon as possible, as
soon as possible, as soon as possible."*
Arafat fits right in at these all-pomp and ceremony, no substance,
summits. His words bear little resemblance to his actions. His
client-regime status and aspirations fit right in with his Saudi,
Egyptian, and Jordanian chums. What a miserable state of affairs.
Message to Yasser: Be Gone Already!
