ISRAELI ARMY PRACTICES TAKING ON PALESTINIANS
MID-EAST REALITIES - Washington - 4/13/00:
While Israel's General/Prime Minister Barak was meeting with the
Americans in Washington, his military back home was busy pushing
further arms sales to China, preparing for a little "war of Lebanon
withdrawal" with Syria, and practicing putting down the Palestinians.
In recent days the Israeli Army, the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) which
continues to be responsible for the occupied territories regardless
of the illusion of partial Palestinian Authority control, conducted
an
extensive military exercise simulating an armed conflict with the
Palestinians throughout the area the Israelis call Judea, Samaria and
Gaza. These military exercises included a "re-conquering" of
various
key areas in the occupied territories where the Palestinian Authority
is
in charge of autonomous affairs. The exercise involved substantial
numbers of troops, armored troop-carrying vehicles, helicopters, and
tanks.
Questioned when news of the military preparations began to leak out,
An Israeli army spokesman indicated that there is a "reasonable
likelihood" of the exercise becoming a reality in the near future.
