MER - 7/14/97:
With this column we begin a new series focusing
specially on the
topic "What To Do?"
No long-winded harangues; no wishy-washy hand-wring.
But rather
clear and concise guidelines for action based on all the analysis and
commentary previously made available here.
Two things should immediately be done. Tomorrow's
vote at the
U.N. should not simply condemn Israel one more time for this or that.
No other country in the world has such a long record of negative U.N.
votes -- in the Security Council as well as in the General Assembly.
Just as South Africa was suspended until Apartheid
was ended, now
it's time to suspend Israel until the "homelands" policy it practices
using means very similar to what was Apartheid are ended, a
sovereign, independent, Palestinian State established, and Palestinian
refugees either compensated or repatriated.
Secondly, the U.S.-Israel plan to further push Israel
into relations
with the Arab States should be halted immediately. The upcoming
Middle East economic conference to be held in Qatar should be canceled.
If they insist on holding it let the Americans and the
Israelis meet
by themselves. This is a time when there should be an economic
boycott of Israel, not economic cooperation.
