- ISRAELI ARMY ARRESTS
MANY
- PALESTINIANS THROUGHOUT
- THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES
+ ARAFAT-CONTROLLED AREAS
MER - 8/1/97:
.
In a wide-scale and still escalating operation
throughout the occupied territories in recent days, the Israeli Army has
arrested more than 50 Palestinians suspected of being involved in actions
against Israel. In some cases arrests have taken place even from areas
supposedly controlled by Arafat's "Palestinian Authority", though
oftentimes this is kept secret and actually such operations began before
the recent Jerusalem bombings. Searches of Palestinian institutions, including
mosques and charities, are also going on at this time and any found with
anti-Israel literature may be closed. Meanwhile Israeli Police have begun
intensive patrols of beaches and other places throughout the country where
crowds gather, in view of Hamas threats to make further attacks if the
leader of Hamas, Sheik Ahmad Yassin, and other Hamas leaders, are not released
by Sunday evening from Israeli prisons.
ISRAELIS CHARGE ARAFAT POLICE CHIEF
WITH TERRORISM
.
In Gaza, reacting to the arrest warrant that
has been issued for him alleging his involvement in terror planning, "Palestinian
Authority" Police Chief Ghazi Jabali said yesterday that this was
all "laughable" and that any Israeli who tries to arrest him
would not survive the attempt. Jabali further said that the Palestinians
are ready for battle if Israel attempts to enter its territory.
ISRAELIS TO JAM PALESTINIAN BROADCASTS...FUNDED
BY U.S.!
.
The Israelis are also now making plans to jam
Palestinian radio and TV broadcasts of the "Palestinian Authority"
even though these are largely paid for by the U.S. State Department (U.S.A.I.D.)
and European Government funds. According to Israeli sources only "broadcasts
containing inciteful material" will be jammed. Personnel of the IDF
Signal Corps have been deployed in key positions throughout the occupied
territories so as to be ready to jam the broadcasts whenever orders are
issued. Friday afternoons sermons from the Al Aksa Mosque in Jerusalem
are likely to be jammed from now on according to Israeli sources.
