"I have doubt about how much [Palestinian]
terrorism can be
-
uprooted. We were also terrorists once
and they didn't uproot
-
us and we went on dealing in terrorist
activities."
MER - It is trauma or guilt
that has overtaken Leah Rabin, wife and partner of assassinated Israeli
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin? A few months ago she was quoted not only
defending Yasser Arafat but also indicating she now felt he was "like a
family member". Now she has publicly acknowledged that her husband
and mainstream Israelis were "terrorists" as well when their political
goals were unaccepted.
The dilemma for Mrs. Rabin
is this: Now that she has begun to see some of the realities she
spent her life hiding from, shouldn't she take the next logical steps and
acknowledge the following:
1) It's time to call for
a fully sovereign Palestinian State - not an Apartheid-style collaboration.
2) It's time to call for
discussions about compensation and reparations for the Palestinians.
3) It's time to acknowledge
that many current Israeli policies are essentially "State terrorism".
4) It's time to call for
opening negotiations with Hamas, today's "terrorists", and releasing Hamas
Leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin from prison.
If only Mrs. Rabin and others
in Israel would take these steps today, rather than 30 or 40 years too
late! Then terrorism would lose its rationale and its support.
Then the road to a real and just and lasting peace
would be open.
