Historical Background:
When the Palestinian Intifada broke out in December
1987 a group of American Jewish professors, academics,
and business persons immediately organized to
support the Palestinian struggle to end the Israeli occupation
and create a fully sovereign and independent
Palestinian State.
Led by Mark
Bruzonsky, former Washington Representative of
the World Jewish Congress, and a journalist
who had visited the Middle East region over 150
times, JCOME published its first full-page Statement
in THE NATION
Magazine on 13 February 1988. It was subsequently
published in The Congressional Record on 28 February, and then,
signed by hundreds of American Jews, in THE NEW
YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS on 31 March.
In the next few years JCOME published nearly 100
mostly full-page Statements and information advertisements
strongly supporting the Palestinian Intifada
and calling for a suspension of U.S. aid to Israel until Israel
ended its occupation of the Palestinians and
a Palestinian State was created.
